Warnings from Islam’s ‘messianic whirlpool’ Jihadists in global
frenzy over coming of prophesied ‘Mahdi’

An Israeli intelligence analyst sees a frenzy of jihadist Internet
communications as part of a “dangerous Islamic messianic whirlpool”
featuring a number of prophecies culminating in the coming of
the “Mahdi,” reports the latest issue of the premium online
intelligence newsletter Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin.

Some of the documents obtained in a sweep of Internet communications
just before the attack on the Madrid trains are signed by an unknown
sheikh – assumed to be a nom de guerre for Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-
Zawahiri or others in leadership in al-Qaida.

The communications make a number of predictions about world events
pointing to “The coming of the Mahdi” – a messianic figure Muslims
expect to come and lead them in victory against the infidels in the
last days.

Here is what these communications foresee:

Two European countries will be attacked.

Another attack is planned against the U.S.

Followers are asked to get rid of euros and as true Muslims replace
them with gold.

There will be an assassination attempt against a high-ranking
Egyptian official.

A mass gathering of jihad warriors is expected in the cities of the
twin holy mosques Mecca and Medina.

A divine signal will be given when three celestial stars will be
aligned on one axis.

The appearance of a new star, never seen before, will be in plain
sight to all humanity.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharaf and Yasser Arafat will be
annihilated in the same month. The list includes other apocalyptic
predictions such as “the march of Islam through Russia, the return of
Islam to Andalusia and a victory parade in Jerusalem with liberated
Saddam Hussein at the lead. This will follow after a war in Syria and
the assassination of King Abdullah of Jordan.”

There is no specific time frame for the apocalyptic prophecy,
according to G2 Bulletin sources. The most important aspect of the
communications is the subsequent attack in Spain, and an important
threat to the continental U.S.

The analyst says the Internet is now the most important tool used by
the jihadi propagandists. Some of the material is clearly a warning
to Muslims to distance themselves from possible target areas.

Further analysis suggests the second European country to be hit,
according to the jihad spirit, is probably Italy or the Vatican. This
is based on constant verbal attacks on the pope as an enemy of Islam
and on rejection of Christian missionary movements in Africa and the
Middle East. A direct threat is aimed against American missionaries
and indeed some were attacked last week in Iraq.

Experts say the latest Ramadan saw, according to Muslim scholars,
three aligned stars. Also the issue of unknown stars is lately
highlighted among jihadists such as the news of March 15 about
distant unknown galaxies and information about new stars. The new
star is explained by the jihadists as the discovery of a new planet.

The jihadists reacted to this information by saying: “Even infidel
researchers are aware of the Mahdi’s message.” G2B reported earlier
that U.S. military intelligence experts were studying a video clip of
bin Laden in which he stands before a dry-erase board with an Arabic
phrase written upon it – “awaited enlightened one.”

No one who has seen the video is quite certain of the meaning or the
context. But, the Hadith, a collection of Islamic holy writings that
supplement the Quran, predicts the messianic figure will arise in the
last days of history. This “Mahdi,” along with the “Prophet Jesus,”
will lead the believers to victory over the infidels.

The video raises the question of whether bin Laden sees himself as
this Mahdi or if he is expecting another to arise and lead. Either
way, the addition of a dimension of Islamic prophecy to the global
terror war may seriously complicate matters for planners in the West.

According to G2 Bulletin’s military sources, some of the detainees
currently held at Guantanamo Bay have told interrogators they joined
bin Laden’s al-Qaida offensive because they think he is the “awaited
enlightened one.” Others in military intelligence say some of the
terrorists crossing the border into Iraq with al-Qaida ties are doing
so because of their belief in this Islamic prophecy.

Muslim believers – both Sunni and Shiite – expect the Mahdi to return
one day to restore justice to the world. This messenger is not as
great as Muhammad, but is a messianic figure found in all branches of
Islam.

Interestingly, since the end of 2001, bin Laden has been signing his
name “Osama bin Muhammad bin Laden,” rather than just Osama bin
Laden. This is significant because it gives the al-Qaida leader an
apocalyptic dimension. The Hadith says the Mahdi will be
recognizable, among other things, by the fact that he carries the
name of the prophet.

The Mahdi is supposed to come, according to Islamic clerics, just
before the advent of the day of judgment – when believers are
severely oppressed in every corner of the world. He will fight
the “oppressors,” unite the Muslims, bring peace and justice to the
world, rule over the Arabs, and lead a prayer in Mecca at which Jesus
will be present, according to Islamic scholars.

One of the most disturbing things being recycled from the lead-up to the Iraq war is the blatant manipulation of media outlets by the US and Israel when it comes to Iran. Israeli officials with shady, sometimes violent histories, are given red carpet treatment on networks like CNN, while the propaganda continues painting Iran as some sort of Hitlerian threat to the world.

There should be little doubt that the Israeli government is making every effort to jump-start a war against Iran sooner rather than later. Many Israelis not surprisingly believe it is in their interest to convince the United States to attack Iran so that Israel will not have to do it, and they are hell-bent on bringing that about. Unfortunately, their efforts are being aided and abetted by a U.S. mainstream media that is unwilling to ask any hard questions or challenge the assumptions of the Israeli government.

Israeli intellectuals such as Benny Morris have been provided a platform to argue implausibly that a little war is necessary right now to prevent a larger nuclear conflict. The repeated visits to Washington by Israeli Minister of Defense Ehud Barak and Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi to pressure Washington to commit to a military option are generally unreported in the U.S. media, and no one is asking why the United States should be involved in what is clearly a “wag the dog” scenario.

For once, however, some officials in Washington appear to have developed a backbone and are pushing back. A flurry of visits to Israel by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen, and intelligence chiefs Mike McConnell and Michael Hayden have made clear that there is considerable opposition at the Pentagon and in intelligence circles to starting a third war at this time. Israel says that Iran is about to obtain a nuclear weapon while the Pentagon and American intelligence services are providing a more cautious assessment, putting forward the U.S. view that Iran is still far removed from having nuclear capability. Mullen went so far as to tell the Israelis flatly that Washington does not want another war. He even brought up the subject of the USS Liberty, a not-so subtle hint that Washington knows that Israel might try to engineer a Gulf of Tonkin-type surprise to force American involvement. Mullen may have been implying that any incident in the Persian Gulf that might lead to armed conflict will be scrutinized carefully to determine if it is a false flag operation initiated by Tel Aviv.

On the home front there is also some additional good news for those who prefer diplomacy to warfare: Congress is in recess and won’t be able to do anything truly stupid, at least not until next month. House Resolution 362 has 261 co-sponsors, but it is still in committee and the word is that it will be rewritten because of concerns about some of its language. Though not binding, it would have recommended a blockade of Iranian ports to stop the import of petroleum products, which many have rightly seen as an act of war. Senate Resolution 580, which has 49 senators as co-sponsors, is also reportedly being redrafted. The antiwar movement has claimed some credit for stopping the two resolutions in their original versions because of a mobilization that produced thousands of calls to congressmen, but AIPAC has been lobbying heavily for the approval of both resolutions. I expect that the Israel lobby will prevail. Both resolutions should pass with overwhelming majorities when Congress reconvenes after Labor Day.

The principal problem in attempting to derail the rush to war has been the mainstream media, which provides a bully pulpit for those who want war. The media also accepts the framework of the Iran “problem” as defined by Washington and Tel Aviv, refusing to enter into any kind of serious, adult discussion of how the outstanding issues between the U.S. and Iran might be resolved. A good example of how it all works was provided on Aug. 3, when Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni was interviewed on CNN’s Late Edition by Wolf Blitzer, who himself once worked for AIPAC.

Livni has an interesting resume. Her father was one of the Irgun terrorists who blew up the King David hotel in 1946 and later massacred Arab villagers in Deir Yassin. As a teenager, Livni participated in demonstrations on behalf of the nationalist extremist group Greater Israel, which advocated expelling all Arabs and extending Israeli domination over all of historic Palestine to include the West Bank, parts of Jordan, up to the Litani River in Lebanon to the north, and down to include Sinai and the Suez Canal in the south and west. She is reported to have mellowed somewhat since that time. She was close to Ariel Sharon, became justice minister, switched over to Kadima with Sharon, and was elected to the Knesset. She was rewarded with the Foreign Ministry by Sharon and now serves Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. She is a former intelligence officer, a lawyer by training, bright and articulate, and generally regarded as a “realist” vis-à-vis the Palestinians and the Muslim world, meaning that she supported the Sharon policy of “disengagement” and seeks a negotiated solution and normalization rather than continuing armed conflict. She appears to be the leading candidate to replace Ehud Olmert when he steps down later this year due to his acceptance of gifts from an American businessman.

Livni has been reported as having said privately in October 2007 that Iran poses no existential threat to Israel and was highly critical of attempts to hype the danger, but her private views have not in any way influenced her public pronouncements. In her interview with CNN she made a number of statements that are inaccurate or at best speculative, but predictably, she was not challenged in any way by Blitzer. Most viewers probably came away from the interview convinced that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons, is unwilling to negotiate over its nuclear enrichment program, and is a danger to the entire world.

Following a lead-in by Blitzer affirming that Iran is “showing absolutely no indication they’re going to stop enriching uranium,” Livni – representing a country that has ignored more UN resolutions than any other, engaged in ethnic cleansing, and attacked all of its neighbors without warning – asserted that “It is clear that Iran doesn’t pay attention to talks … Iran is a threat, not only to Israel, but this is a global threat.
“

Blitzer then obligingly provided another softball, referring to Ehud Barak’s assessment that there is only a window of 15 to 36 months before Iran crosses the “line of no return.” While it is not clear what the expression “line of no return” means, Livni jumped on it, saying that “any kind of hesitation … is being perceived by the Iranians as weakness. … Iran is a threat to its neighbors, as well. … We shouldn’t wait for what we call ‘point of no return.’” Blitzer then asked, “You don’t even give them 15 months necessarily. You think it’s a more urgent matter?” “Yes,” Livni answered.

Blitzer then suggested that the U.S. might not ready for a “third front” in the Middle East at the present time, to which Livni replied, “[T]he world cannot afford a nuclear Iran and weapons of mass destruction everywhere in this region, in the hands not only of states, but also of terrorist organizations.” Livni clearly believes that it is all right for Israel to have a secret nuclear arsenal but unacceptable for any of Israel’s neighbors, because they cannot be trusted to behave responsibly. The allegation that Tehran would give nuclear weapons to terrorists surfaces frequently from Israeli and neocon sources. It is speculative and in all likelihood a complete fantasy, given the apocalyptic consequences of such an action for Iran, but Blitzer failed to contest the point. The terrorist argument is an essential line in the script for those who want the U.S. to engage in a war with Iran.

Tzipi Livni should not be blamed for reciting her lines in spite of her personal misgivings, because she is, after all, the government official responsible for explaining Tel Aviv’s foreign policy. It is the American media that continues to play the patsy. If interviewers like Wolf Blitzer are the best that the U.S. mainstream media can come up with, then we are in serious trouble. The interview format itself is a travesty, particularly as it suggests that some rational process is being applied to either critique or validate what the interviewee is saying. As the Livni interview demonstrates, if the subject is the Middle East and the interviewer is Wolf Blitzer, that is not likely to be the case.

Comment Today, while going through the news, and the Obama team voting site (presently having over 3,000votes) , along with other factors, I came to a conclusion. Today something felt ominously true to me. Though so needlessly true as well.

Thinking of all of the disclosures over the government officials who are going to comprise our cabinet positions, the general anger over the white collar welfare bailout, the demands for justice leading the pack, the worries of people voiced on this site, and a countless other fears on top of those fears. All begging their abusers for help. Remember always that the government gets exactly what they pay for. They are not stupid, but are corrupt and greedy lawyers instead. This crash, this whole scenario was no accident. Our ills were born of their ill intent. And boy were we screwed.

Of course, we not only let them screw us over, we conspired to enable them to prostitute ourselves for them. Not knowingly, but enabling doesn’t require knowledge, it even works better if you are unknowing of your assistance. We have let a few thousand people guide us to the brink of a fully planned self-destruction. In a world of over seven billion, a few thousand is absolutely nothing. It’s zero. Unless we help them.

If you find it difficult to believe that a government which has lied about everything it’s ever been forced to admit in public is working for your worst possible interests, then you are lost already.

Something is terribly wrong with this picture. How many people believe truly that this president picked his cabinet members on a whim? That their opinions differ from his? These are the people that dictate policy for an administration. They are of the same cut as the Bush administration most of us are glad to see leave. Some of them are even from the Bush administration. And some of them are even worse. Or at least openly so. They are all damned smart enemies of peace.

We’ve been lied to about the reasons for our conquest of Iraq and Afghanistan. And still we follow those lies. We even enforce them with our childrens’ lives. And while our troops are in, they are given (as always) experimental vaccinations. They are taught violence upon others. They are discarded when discharged, and left to fend for themselves. As always. As every oppressive government must do with their discarded heroes. And never forget that government is only force. But a force that must be accepted. Or rather tolerated.

During the Iran/Contra trial, the entire government was proven guilty of being the drug smugglers they swore in their campaigns to vanquish. I have the documentary from that time on one of my posts. Can you honestly have any doubt as to the government’s involvement with the opium fields in Afghanistan as well? Illegal drugs are the largest commodity in the world, five hundred billion dollars a year. Tax free. You’d have to be a fool to believe the government, or rather, sections of all governments weren’t involved to some degree. It is bigger than the oil we supposedly fight over as a matter of national security. And you wonder why drugs are so plentiful when it takes a government to distribute them through every town in America. And yet you think our government is trying to stop them? I don’t think so. This government is all too well-equiped to stop something this large, unless it is the one responsible for all of the deadly drugs on our streets. And they always ask of the message we’d send to the children if we didn’t keep them illegal. Keep them even richer. And all hidden and tax-free.

This bailout helps no one the government claimed it was to help. Nor did they care for our voices. For our say in the matter. Though We, the People, are the economy. At least in a free state. No provisions for it’s use. No accountability. No signs of relieving the stress upon the masses. That would be us. And this incoming administration pleaded for it’s passage, as did the other party. And you doubt there is any difference between the two parties. They are all just the Federal Reserve Party.

Obama signed on to many of the bills in question which took away even more of our priviliges. At least they still let us call them rights. He has endorsed the killing off of the Posse Comiteus Act by placing those illegal troops all around him on Inaguration Night.

The teachings of the Buddha, and the Christ figure have both been so perverted by religions they have lost all of their original meaning. Though the Buddhist message remains truer in philosophy than religious practise, it’s essence being to practise compassionate love for all living things. In Christianity, it was a message that required no name for your God, and only that you love this presence with everything you had. And that you love your neighbor as you love yourself. Somewhere, they have been perverted into messages of hate. I am in America, so I will stay with the Christian religion for this post. In this land of Christian religion.

Since Christianity has morphed itself into a religion of hatreds and judgements, which espouses the exact opposite of it’s original intent, it might be better defined as anti-Christian. Tell me why we only pay attention to the hate filled laws of the Old Testament, when the Christ figure gave so elegant instructions for us to only follow his two laws. In the King James you can read these two laws in Mark 29-31. In various areas he railed against the teachings of the Pharisees, the ones who followed the Old Testament Anti- Christianity. The ones he called the blind leading the blind. The ones who try and make doomsday prophecy a self-fullfilling event. As if being a willing partner of destroying most of the world would ever qualify a person for entering their version of heaven. I think that global murder probably constitutes some kind of sin.

I accept no religion. I trust no doctrine outside of myself. My inner self needs no rules to follow. I need not worry. Neither do you. I know deep down it really is all just a ride. I’m just getting a bit tired of this ride. Living in a world where all religions practice what they preach, and they all preach us to hate each other. But that doesn’t mean I can throw any stones either. I have many times before, and even now I throw them. And worry of what will happen to me. And wonder why all I see is despair. But I know it is an illusion which I make real for me. As we all do.

I don’t find it necessary to believe this figure Christ had to exist, or be born differently from others if he did. I have no idea, and neither does anyone else. No one can prove it either way. Nor does it matter. Those words of the two commandments pretty much cover all one needs to do in life to be a better person. How does killing make you more a Christian? How does not believing in Christ being of miraculous birth keep you from practicing those laws any differently than someone who does believe this? How does hating your fellow human being make you more righteous? How does your fear make you holier than I? How does mine?

During the inaguration, our new leader will begin his reign with an invocation by one of the more controversial preachers of this anti-Christianity, and we still follow their words like salvation. They are our damnation. If we give in to their sins. If we continue to embrace their hate. For then, it woul be ours as well. Our sins. Our hate. Only we can own those feelings. And only we can let go of them.

Whenever one of us gives in to fear, or anger, or retribution, we encourage this system. This rising call for justice only keeps us further away from our higher selves. A self beyond any religious name. We have all sinned in this play. Every one of us are guilty. When now is always the time we should follow those simple two commandments of love. Regardless of your religion, they are still a good message to follow. If Christians practiced these two laws, they wouldn’t have built such a world of terror. This goes for all the religions, it’s just I live in a country of supposedly Christian values. Yet, we spend all our wealth on war and on inflicting our miserable fears on the rest of the world.

I live in America. It’s not exactly open for many faiths in the media. I speak in the Christian terminology because most people say they are Christian. Though our laws certainly have no compassion in them. No redemption. Only private prisons searching for another dollar to steal in their damning system. Lock them up and damn their lives forever more. No more voting. No more opportunity. No salvation at all in our laws. Or in our Christianity. Only greed and judgements of hate reign in our government. And our religions as well.

Just following those two commandments pretty much erases the possiblity of fighting any wars, doesn’t it? Any true crimes which you could commit if you followed them. Any Judgements you might make or enforce upon another if they broke a rule. For you even more than the one you judge.

It is our hatreds and our fears that are destroying us. It is this sense of outrage that demands punishment that is destroying us. How did a religion that bore a message of love, that showed the past as the wrong path to follow, turn immediately to that path of self-destruction? Where is the love in this religion? I see no heart in this perversion today. And all we have to do is walk away.

Walk away from our judgements. Walk away from our fears. We truly only have fear to fear. It is all that can defeat us. Given the choice between fear and love, I’ll take love any day. Though we should think of giving love instead of receiving love. These were the messages of the namesake of Christianity. Where do you find these in our hate filled churches? Next to their golden thrones?

We’ve all played our part in this play, but all we have to do is love each other as ourselves to change this play. In any religion, that would seem to be a good call. These days, it seems we have so much in the way of destructive abilities to deal out our hate, and so little to deal out compassion. What does that say about us? Especially since we have bankrupted ourselves with the costs of our armies. Where is the love in our selves? Is it bankrupt as well? Has it all been defeated by fear? When all we have to do is walk away from their illusionary powers over us, what is there to fear, but fear itself?

All we have to do is walk away from our parts we’ve been playing. Instead of what this obviously evil entity has planned.And this entity is ourselves. All of us. Each and every one of us. For we have all focused on what we don’t want. We don’t want hunger. We don’t want hate. We don’t want poverty. We don’t want to sin. But we never focus on what we do want. Peace and prosperity for all. And if enough of us focus on that, then it might just happen. For all of us.

All lives are spiritual paths which are nothing but individual perspectives of the whole. But love is at the core of all the true paths. What path do you walk? The path of love or the path of fear?

Many people still harbor the belief that their opinion no longer matters to the government. In a very real sense, they are exactly right. But that doesn’t mean we actually don’t matter. It just means our government is far out of line with what We, the People actually care about.

We are being told what we believe by our media interests, and by our politicians. Does this mean they are correct?

Hardly, and it only takes a short visit to the Obama-Biden team’s website, http://change.gov to realize this truth. The questions being posed are hardly related to the issues the candidates campaigned on with such passionate vagueness.

For me, I believe his cabinet choices reflect his true agenda, and it is not in our best interests, but the international bankers and international corporations interests. Cabinet positions set the tone for the agenda of a presidency, and his choices do not bode well for We, the People. They pose a threat to us instead.

Does this mean we should just give up? Hardly. We, the People are the government, unless we do give up. That is why I have voted on, to date, 2,585 questions.

I am now focusing on two separate issues. Anything to do with bringing the Drug War to an end, and anything to do with abolishing the Federal Reserve system. These two issues have done more to create the myriad of problems facing our country today than any other issue being brought up for questioning.

The Drug War has been the most powerful weapon used by our government to fund a police state mind-set among our peoples and to destroy any concept of justice for all. It has always served to further the divisions of the masses along class and race, and only fuels the industries which defeat the concepts of Truth, Liberty, and Justice for all. These would be the funding with proceeds, and without oversight, of the drug warriors. The incredible growth of the private prison systems, by overcrowding the county, state, and federal prisons. The increasingly frightening inability of the accused to have access to a fair trial. The tremendous burden placed on the taxpayers, not only with the cost of maintaining such institutions, but with the inability of those incarcerated to ever become truly contributory citizens ever again.

The Federal Reserve System has often been correctly described as being far from a federal institution. It’s illegal existence began in 1913, and is responsible to no one but it’s owners. These owners are never published and refuse to have the Federal Reserve audited. They create inflation and devalue our currency.

We have, immediately since it’s inception, remained a nation of wars fought for the bankers interests, and not for the common good. It is an abomination that threatens liberty with each day it exists. And it should, and will be destroyed. Or else it will destroy us, if it hasn’t already.

So, what can we do? To start with, go to the “change.gov” site. In the search field type in the following words: cannabis, marijuana, drug war, hemp, federal reserve, central bank. Click yes on any question which would bump these questions up in the field which Obama must at least pay lip service to when he answers them. Force them to acknowledge these issues so that all of us may know our enemy. Spread the word, either by linking to my site, or by telling others from yours or even by voice. By email. By whatever means necessary.

I believe we will not see the change many thought we would get from this administration, but a furthering of the root causes of our decline. There will be a great depression, but that doesn’t mean we should act as sheep in our destruction.

And while the politicians, the bankers, and the corporations party on the 20th; remember it is our money they are partying with. In each of the 20 inaugural balls. It is our money they are giving to the welfare recipients on Wall St, in the auto industry, to the bankers, and none to those who need the money the most: the people being raped by these very institutions. To put it in perspective, it would be cheaper to give every American 3,000 dollars, than to continue the bailout as planned. How can this bailout work? It will, but not in the direction you might think best. The government gets what the government wants. Just what do you think they want with the plans which BOTH parties have proscribed?

This could not happen to a better company, after what they pulled on past employees, they deserve to close their doors. This is what they get for how they treat the working people.
If these companies put more money back and less in their pockets, they would be solvent, they are no better then wall street, pocketing all the profits and then wanting every body to work for peanuts, or for nothing, then look for a bailout.

Circuit City became the largest retailer to fall victim to the expanding financial crisis Friday, announcing it will shut down its remaining 567 U.S. stores at the cost of 34,000 more jobs after failing to sell the business.

The closure of the nation’s second-biggest consumer electronics retailer spells more trouble for the nations malls, and is the latest casualty of an unprecedented pullback in consumer spending that has claimed KB Toys, Mervyns LLC and Linens ‘N Things.

“Very, very sad,” said Alan L. Wurtzel, son of company founder Samuel S. Wurtzel and himself a former chief executive of Circuit City. “I feel particularly badly for the people who are employed or until recently were employed.”

Richmond, Va.-based Circuit City had been seeking a buyer or a deal to refinance its debt, but the hobbled credit market and consumer worries proved insurmountable. Negotiations for an acquisition extended past midnight Thursday before finally falling through, Circuit City lawyer Gregg Galardi said.

Two potential buyers — Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego, who controls a chain of electronics stores in Latin America, and the Golden Gate Capital private equity firm — considered a shrunken form of the business, retaining as many 350 stores or as few as 180. But Circuit City couldn’t secure the necessary financing or support from vendors.

“This is the only possible path for our company,” acting Chief Executive James A. Marcum said in a statement. “We are extremely disappointed by this outcome.”

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Huennekens gave final approval to the liquidation plan Friday afternoon. Some employees were notified that they would lose their jobs and certain stores would begin close-out sales as early as Saturday.

“Since my childhood, that’s been where you go to buy electronics — Circuit City,” said 37-year-old Sonya Webb, who was standing outside a store in Chattanooga, Tenn., watching as an employee set a 46-inch Sony television in her car.

Webb, an administrative assistant at a dialysis clinic, said she usually compared Circuit City, Best Buy and Sears when making purchases, but that Circuit City was always her preferred choice. She said she came to buy the TV after she heard that the stores were closing.

Circuit City said liquidating the stores should last through March, after which they will be closed. A small staff will keep working at the corporate office through that process.

The company’s inventory has a retail value of about $1.8 billion, said James Schaye, president and CEO of Hudson Capital Partners, the liquidator. He said sales will begin with up to 30 percent discounts and will be adjusted as the liquidation continues.

“There’s a lot of great deals,” Schaye said. “If you’re competing against someone like Best Buy, we’re going to be at a much better discount than they’re going to be.”

It was unclear what would happen to the company’s 765 retail stores and dealer outlets in Canada. Galardi told a judge there are still bids for the Canadian business.

Circuit City’s brand value was diminished in the 1990s as it faced tougher competition from Best Buy Co., which built bigger stores in better locations.

Wurtzel has previously said Circuit City didn’t take the threat from Best Buy seriously enough and at some points was too focused on short-term profit rather than long-term value.

Circuit City’s failed turnaround efforts included laying off higher-paid employees, opening smaller concept stores, seeking potential buyers, changing management and closing stores. In 2007, it laid off about 3,400 store workers and replaced them with lower-paid employees. Analysts had warned the move could hurt morale and drive away customers.

Marvin Allen, 46, of Cleveland, Tenn., was at a Chattanooga store Friday shopping for a computer desk. He said the closings were bad not only for the people losing jobs, but also for consumers, because competition helps keep prices down. Allen said he and his wife, Teresa, 54, purchased a television from Circuit City just before Christmas.

“It means fewer places left to compare (prices),” she said.

Credit Suisse analyst Gary Balter told investors that Circuit City’s demise should “further secure Best Buy’s position as the leader.” Shares of Best Buy Co. rose $2.20, or 8 percent, to $29.34 on Friday.

The liquidation of Circuit City follows the worst holiday shopping season since at least 1969. People have slashed their spending as they worry about their job security and declining retirement funds. Already this week, department store chains Goody’s Family Clothing and Gottschalks Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection.

Analysts said the loss of Circuit City will be a particularly big blow to malls, which have suffered from a rise in vacancies as chains have liquidated and now face even more empty space. Circuit City stores range from 20,000 to 25,000 square feet.

“It will bring to market a glut of big box spaces across the country,” said John Bemis, head of Jones Lang LaSalle Inc.’s retail leasing team. “It will have one of the largest impacts on big box real estate across the country.”

Circuit City filed for Chapter 11 in November as vendors started to restrict the flow of merchandise. It had been exploring its options since May, when it opened its books to Blockbuster Inc. The Dallas-based chain made a takeover bid of more than $1 billion, but withdrew the offer in July.

Circuit City said it had $3.4 billion in assets and $2.32 billion in liabilities as of Aug. 31. Under court protection, it broke 150 leases at locations where it no longer operated stores and closed 155 stores in the U.S. in November and December.

“Unfortunately, there won’t be a Circuit City after today,” Galardi said Friday.

The agony of the Ecstasy

The most commonly heard estimate is that Israeli criminals control no less than 75 percent of the Ecstasy market in the U.S. How did Israel become a central player in this dubious game?

Washington — Oded Tuito died on June 20 [2004] at Lutheran Hospital in New York, a few days after suffering a heart attack in his cell in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York. Tuito, 44, was thought to be one of the major drug dealers in the United States — although he was never convicted — and to be the person responsible for smuggling millions of Ecstasy (MDMA) tablets into that country in the late 1990s.

He was the first Israeli to be included on the White House list of “drug kingpins,” which consists of 30 foreigners whom the U.S. administration views as bearing central responsibility for distributing drugs originating abroad in the U.S. The “kingpin” category is reserved for drug traffickers whose scope of activity makes them a threat to the national security of the U.S., so that a special effort is required to apprehend them, freeze their assets and stop their activity.

Oded Tuito died innocent, at least according to American law. He was facing legal proceedings in Brooklyn, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, but none of them had been completed. Still, Tuito in large measure personifies the Israelis who are increasingly being targeted by the U.S. law enforcement authorities as the dominant figures in the transfer of Ecstasy from European labs, where it is manufactured, to U.S. clubs.

Israelis involved in the Ecstasy trade in the U.S. are scattered around the country, and according to the authorities are not necessarily organized in large groups, and certainly not under one criminal umbrella organization. There is no Israeli mafia that deals in Ecstasy, but wherever the drug is trafficked on a significant scale, there are sure to be Israelis in the vicinity. Israelis figure prominently in cases currently under investigation in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York and Miami — cities that constitute the primary source of drug consumption at parties in the U.S.

According to a report issued in 2003 by the U.S. State Department, Israel is at the center of international trafficking in Ecstasy and Israeli crime organizations, some of them linked to similar organizations from Russia, achieved a dominant status in the Ecstasy market in Europe, and went on to control the drug’s distribution in the States.

“Israeli drug-trafficking organizations are the main source of distribution of the drug to groups in the U.S, using express mail services, commercial airlines, and recently also using air cargo services,” the report states. The authorities do not provide official data on the scope of the Israeli trade in Ecstasy, but the most commonly heard estimate is that Israeli criminals control no less than 75 percent of the Ecstasy market in the U.S.

How did Israel become a central player in this dubious game? The explanation is apparently historical in character. A report of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) explains, in understated language, that

“Israeli drug traffickers, perhaps thanks to their long-standing ties in Antwerp, continue to be the major elements in the transfer of large shipments of Ecstasy from Belgium [to the United States].”

Underlying this cautious formulation is the assumption that Israeli mobsters have been operating for years in Belgium, mainly in diamond smuggling, and that when the country became a source of Ecstasy production in Europe and Antwerp became the drug’s major export hub to the U.S., Israeli criminals naturally became involved. After all, they were already there.

The Israeliness of the Ecstasy smugglers is a relative matter. Law-enforcement sources in the States and Israel emphasized that few Israelis are involved, and often they can be described as “former Israelis.” Frequently they are young people who left the country of their own volition and hooked up with the underworld and the drug trade overseas. Some of them were, in fact, already connected with Israeli criminal organizations back at home, while others operate without any connections there. In some cases the struggle over control of the Israeli crime families has been exported to the drug market in the U.S., though the Israeli players in the Ecstasy market in America are only loosely connected to the major criminal organizations back home.

Las Vegas connectionIsrael as a country is not a problem in the Ecstasy sphere in the U.S., but Israelis as individuals definitely are. The relatively new arena of the Israeli Ecstasy distributors in the U.S. is Las Vegas. In the past, the city’s casinos and tumultuous nightlife have attracted many groups of criminals, from pimps to Mafia bosses, but the Israeli presence was not felt. True, the city still remembers the period more than 50 years ago when the Jewish bosses of the Mafia, Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky, were in control, but until this year, the Jewish or Israeli presence in the Las Vegas crime scene was not considered significant.

The change began with the exposure of an Israeli crime syndicate, which the American media dubbed the “Jerusalem Network” and which, according to the police, seized control of the Ecstasy market in the city. At the beginning of this month, Gabriel Ben-Harosh, 39, who is suspected of being the head of the Jerusalem Network, was extradited from Canada to the U.S.

Ben-Harosh, along with four other Israelis, is accused of committing a series of crimes involving extortion and money laundering. However, the indictment, filed in April, does not cite drug offenses. Law-enforcement officials in Las Vegas believe that the major source of the network’s income derives from the distribution of Ecstasy to clubs in the city. According to Sergeant Blake Quackenbush, from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police: “A lot of the Ecstasy we see in Las Vegas comes from Israeli dealers.” Apart from the current gang, he notes, a good many Israelis have been arrested in the city in recent years, most of them in connection with attempts to smuggle Ecstasy and distribute it to local clubs.

The investigation against the Israeli gang in Las Vegas lasted 14 months, and when the indictment was issued last April, it turned out that the tracks led from Las Vegas via drug and other criminal activity throughout the U.S., to drug suppliers in Europe and to the group that is considered one of the largest organized crime gangs in Israel: the Abergil family. Quite possibly the term “Jerusalem Network” stems from a misunderstanding, as in Israel the nickname of “Jerusalem Gang” is actually applied to a different crime family, and the major activity of the Abergils has not taken place in Jerusalem.

Ze'ev Rosenstein arrested Police and DEA officials in the States believe that Ben-Harosh is the representative of Yitzhak Abergil in the Las Vegas underworld. Abergil, who, by order of the Israel Police has lived outside Israel since his release from prison, is considered the major rival of Ze’ev Rosenstein (right, wetting his pants, arrested) and a key figure in the Israeli crime scene. The police maintain that Ben-Harosh was responsible for setting up the network in Las Vegas and for creating a monopoly in that city’s Ecstasy market.

Abergil’s manIn addition to keeping Ben-Harosh under surveillance, Las Vegas detectives spent considerable time tracking another suspect, Hai Waknine, 32, who is believed to be Ben-Harosh’s deputy and is also wanted in the city. The investigation found that Waknine, who resides in Los Angeles most of the time, went on high-rolling trips to Las Vegas, dropping thousands of dollars at casinos. Wiretapping of Waknine’s phones turned up the fact that he spoke constantly with Ben-Harosh, who was in Spain at the time, and that he laundered drug money for him. The other aspects cited in the Las Vegas indictment are Assaf Waknine (Hai’s brother), Yoram El-Al and Sasson Barashy.

According to reports in the Las Vegas media, the Israeli mobsters in the city succeeded in forging ties with a number of owners of local clubs where large quantities of Ecstasy are consumed, and in ensuring an Israeli monopoly on local distribution of the drug. The Israeli network indeed controls the Ecstasy market, say the police and the DEA, but it also engages in other activity — notably extortion and the protection racket.

The local descriptions of the Israeli group are hardly flattering. Its members are said to be flashy, not especially careful (during the lengthy surveillance of the group, police discovered that most of the suspects attended a lavish Passover Seder at one of the most expensive hotels in the city), and not deterred by the use of violence or threats of violence to get what they want.

GABRIEL Ben-Harosh was arrested in Canada at the request of the U.S. authorities and held in custody for several months in Toronto before being extradited — with his full consent, according to his lawyer — to Las Vegas. The lawyer, David Chesnoff, says his client requested to go to the U.S. to prove his innocence. “He is looking forward to his day in court,” Chesnoff says, adding that Ben-Harosh “does not know anything about any `Jerusalem Network’ and about any allegations [against him].”

Chesnoff, a prominent lawyer who was part of the team that defended Martha Stewart, adds: “I met with him in Canada and he told me he is 100 percent innocent. I believe he will be acquitted.”

At this stage it’s not clear what the probe into “an Israeli organized crime syndicate,” as it is called in the indictment, will turn up. The charges, as stated, don’t yet include drug-related clauses. Meanwhile, the prestigious lawyers involved promise a lengthy judicial process. A source in the Las Vegas police said one of the results could be a decision by the Israeli mob to leave town, if they feel that the police are hot on their heels. On the other hand, the large profits and the Israelis’ absolute control of the Las Vegas Ecstasy market make this unlikely.

Be that as it may, the information uncovered by the law-enforcement authorities about the activities of Israeli criminals in Las Vegas sheds light on the scope of the phenomenon today — ties with organized crime in Israel, various centers in Europe and across the U.S., and criminal activity that combines classic Mafia deeds with niche operations involving trafficking in Ecstasy.

The indictments in Las Vegas are perhaps the most recent and most detailed, but they are certainly not the only ones concerning Israeli involvement in the distribution of Ecstasy in the U.S. The list is long and extends from coast to coast: two Israelis in their twenties who were arrested with a million Ecstasy tablets in their possession in New York in the summer of 2001; two others who were picked up when they received a Fed Ex package containing 200 kilos of Ecstasy tablets; three residents of the city of Givatayim, adjacent to Tel Aviv, who were extradited to the U.S. last year after a shipment containing 500,000 tablets that they sent to Brooklyn was seized by the authorities, a few years after they were extradited to south Florida after a scheme to smuggle drugs into Miami was exposed; and many others.

Along with the small fry, some Israelis in the top ranks of the Ecstasy business have also been arrested — notably Jacob “Cookie” Orgad, who controlled the market in Los Angeles, and Ilan Zarger, who was the Ecstasy supplier to the well-known Mafia figure Salvatore (Sammy the Bull) Gravano, from the Gambino crime family.

Mistakenly releasedTwo classes of players can be distinguished among Israelis involved in the Ecstasy scene: the directors of the networks, who usually also have connections to crime organizations in Israel and come from the underworld, and the couriers, who are responsible for getting the drugs from Europe to the States. The couriers are recruited in Europe or the U.S. in return for the promise of big profits and for the most part carry out similar missions many times.

The numerous charges against the late Oded Tuito cast some light on how the Israeli networks operate. Tuito was suspected of having ties with Ecstasy suppliers in Europe and of being a major recruiter of couriers in the U.S., who were carrying millions of tablets into the country from Europe. The prosecution alleged that Tuito developed a fondness for strip joints in New York during his visits to the U.S. and hired strippers to fly to Europe in return for a payment of $10,000 to bring back suitcases filled with tens of thousands of tablets. The luggage the women took with them to Europe contained tens of thousands of dollars in cash — Tuito’s earnings from previous drug deals.

In addition to the strippers, Tuito also made use of young ultra-Orthodox Jews, whom he recruited by word of mouth in New York yeshivas. He believed — and rightly so, as it turned out — that the U.S. authorities would not suspect yeshiva students dressed in the traditional black garb and therefore would not check their luggage at the airport in New York.

Hundreds of thousands of Ecstasy pills reached the U.S. this way. Later he also started to recruit elderly ultra-Orthodox, again in return for thousands of dollars per delivery.

Tuito was initially detained in France, but was released by mistake and got to Spain, from where he was extradited to the U.S. after a years-long legal battle. In testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Committee last March, DEA administrator Karen Tandy stated that Tuito “was known as the world’s largest trafficker of MDMA [Ecstasy].” Tuito, she added, was responsible for the importation of over 7 million tablets of MDMA into the U.S. during his period of activity. The investigation against him completely “dismantled Tuito’s MDMA trafficking organization and seriously impacted the ability of Israeli organized crime groups to distribute MDMA into domestic consumer markets,” she stated in her testimony.

Alexi Schacht, Tuito’s lawyer, believes that the description of his client’s exploits in the Ecstasy market was greatly exaggerated.

“The government behaved as if Ecstasy is the same as cocaine and heroin, as if he is one CEO that runs the operation, but it doesn’t work that way. With Ecstasy, people buy and sell to everyone.”

Schacht adds that it was unreasonable to place his client on the “drug kingpins” list. One way or another, the lawyer maintains, the effect of the arrest and lengthy incarceration of Oded Tuito — who was known to investigators as “Fat Man” — on the trafficking of in Ecstasy in the U.S. was no more than marginal, as most of the activity attributed to him took place years ago and he had been out of the game since being arrested in France and Spain. “He was a very nice and friendly man, he spoke several languages and even though he had no formal education, he was very smart,” Schacht says, summing up his opinion of the person who was called the world’s greatest trafficker in Ecstasy.

The new Israelis who are active in the Ecstasy market in the States are different from Tuito, not only in the scale of their trafficking but also in their methods of operation. When Ecstasy came onto the drug market it was a new phenomenon. It was manufactured in the underground and penetration of it in the U.S. required mainly thought, boldness and a great deal of money. In recent years the picture has changed: The federal authorities in the U.S. have greatly stiffened the punishment for trafficking in Ecstasy so that in practice, it is now comparable to the punishment stipulated for dealers of addictive hard drugs. As a result, the Ecstasy industry has passed into the hands of the organized crime bosses, who are willing to take the risk and who have the connections and the wherewithal to cope with the hard hand of the law-enforcement agencies.

However, this situation, too, is thought to be on the brink of change. Whereas in the past decade Europe was the principal source for the Ecstasy supply in the States, and Israeli traffickers dominated the trans-Atlantic lines of shipment, more recently there has been an increase in the manufacture of Ecstasy in Latin America. If the major source of the drug’s supply shifts southward, it’s unlikely that the Israeli mobsters will succeed in maintaining their control of the market. The reasons: the mechanism for smuggling drugs from Central and South America into the U.S. has operated for years without Israeli involvement; and it will be difficult to keep up a competitive price in European Ecstasy in the face of the goods that will arrive from south of the border.

The upcoming Financial Stimulus package courtesy of the new Economic dream team has left numerous economists and analysts quaking in their boots.

We are seeing predictions of hyperinflation, the destruction of the dollar, the flight of U.S. creditors, the prospect of widespread civil unrest and a descent in to a Greater Depression.

Small business owners have stood up and discredited the tax incentives that were meant to convince them to ignore market reality and open the door to new employees. The measures that supposedly address the enormous foreclosure problem seem to change from day to day and only work to the advantage of the banks. Obama and Bush have just signed off on an additional $20 Billion in cash and $118 Billion in asset guarantees for Bank of America which already received $25 Billion last year and is now choking on Merrill Lynch’s losses. The President Elect and his new Stimulus Czars are not paying attention and are proceeding to continue the same destructive formula adopted by Paulson.

The media bombardment is in overdrive to convince the public that herein lies the path to salvation. First we had the guarantee that three million jobs would be created out of thin air only to be bumped up to four million. These are nice round media friendly numbers which have no basis in reality. With each passing day the sands are shifting on exactly how the money will be spent.

Ben Bernancke’ s speech at the London School of Economics on January 13, confirmed that the emphasis has now shifted to bailing out the banks one more time by buying more toxic assets to clean up their collapsing balance sheets. After seeing $8.2 Trillion vanish in to Insurance, Banking and a moribund auto industry with absolutely no concrete result except for the tightening of credit, the increasing losses of Big Banking and the GM chairman having to queue for his airline ticket, the Fed, backed by Obama, continues to beat the dead horse.

The scariest aspect of this is the speed at which this 18 wheeler disaster is being driven toward the rabbits in the headlights. We haven’t yet seen any senators or reps being threatened with the imposition of martial law, but we have seen Obama treathen to veto his own fellow democrats if they do not rubber stamp the proposals he has been instructed to deliver. Nobody has even taken a vote yet and already the gloves are off. Bailout Bill One and the Patriot Act were pushed just as hard. The only legislation that gets the hard sell seems to involve either stealing the taxpayer’s money or their rights.

Judging by his actions so far, Obama has done absolutely nothing but continue the transfer of wealth from the American taxpayer to his Wall St. campaign contributors.

There has been absolutely zero positive impact on the real economy as the increasingly horrific indicators continue to mount and the prospect of an unprecedented Depression continues to rise over the horizon. Economic reality was left on the back burner and the capital that could have paid for Obama’s fantastical “stimulus” plan 5 times over has been wasted on the imploding financial sector, who no doubt will be back for more
